Story Idea: UNMC dental student earns top honors for cleft palate research

A University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry student has earned top honors for research that could one day improve speech outcomes and quality of life for patients born with cleft palate, one of the most common congenital birth defects in the United States.

Colton Allen, a junior dental student, earned first place at the college’s annual Research Day for work exploring biology-driven approaches to improve treatment outcomes for patients with cleft conditions. Allen conducted the research under the mentorship of Ali Nawshad, PhD, a professor at the college.

“Cleft palate is one of the most common congenital birth defects in humans, affecting approximately 1 in 100 births in the United States,” Allen said. “I am proud to have conducted research focused on improving the quality of life for those affected.”

Nawshad said Allen is working with his team to better understand genetic approaches that could one day improve treatment and repair options for patients with cleft palate.

“His commitment to understanding the science behind cleft palate repair reflects the kind of innovation and patient-centered thinking that will help advance the future of dental medicine,” Nawshad said.

The research also resonated with families directly impacted by cleft conditions.

“His presentation was amazing,” said Esther Edelman, parent of a child with cleft lip and palate. “It’s meaningful to see this kind of work being done.”

This story provides a compelling look at how student and faculty research in Nebraska is advancing care for children and families affected by cleft conditions.
